Reflection on Week Two

I completed the internet browser worksheet yesterday, but I didn't learn anything that made me think that I would recommend one browser over another to my students.  My school has more Macs and students generally use Safari.  The difference among browsers that seemed most relevant to me was Safari and Chrome's ability to open up Java.

I have used Firefox for years, and I talked to my brother-in-law who works for Apple yesterday and he said that Firefox is a great browser choice for me for what I do because it's cross-platform and great for web applications and online forms.

I just started going through the social bookmarking websites.  It was useful to read Crystal's post on her blog today because she feels that social bookmarking is a tool that she's going to be able to use with her students as they do research projects, so I'm going to keep that idea in mind as I look at some of the bookmarking tools.

  1. I agree with your comments about doing the browser worksheet. I learned a lot of information, but I believe that you use what you feel comfortable with that also fits your needs. The one thing that I did learn was how to PAGE ZOOM by using the "Ctrl +/-" keys. I only thought you could page zoom on an iPad!

I also just started the social bookmarking assignment. I am finding the learning curve to be difficult. I had the bookmarking toolbar in Diigo and then I lost it (the toolbar and part of my mind!). This is when I would really love a classroom teacher standing next to me, reassuring me that everything will be all right, and then showing me what I need to do.

I do agree with your comment that using these social bookmarking sites would be very beneficial for research projects/papers. I'm trying to keep my mind open to the many uses to help me keep my frustrations at bay. :-)

  2. What a great resource...a brother-in-law who works at Apple. Nice to have professionals in the field to keep you up to date. I agree with you that for most commong uses it seems like there is not one that really rises about the rest. I do see that knowing the differences can allow us to have some expertise with the students. Most of them just use Explorer since that is what is on our computers at school.
I love how courses like this make everyone think. Each new tool just gets our creative juices flowing and we look towards the next project to use our new tool. :)
